A mix dedicated to the asian tsunami disaster in 2005

“What’s to know about it? er… this mix was meant to come out via Music Relief, a charity site selling music to help disaster victims, but for some reason or other the site never got off the ground even 7 months later – so fuck it, here is the mix anyway.

It was made a few weeks after the Tsunami disaster, early 2005 in the middle of winter. Prolonged lack of sunlight and very cold weather can make people a bit mental. “Sign of the dub” by Kode 9 was looping in my head all the time, it’s that simple doom-speech plus bassline-in-a-dark-room track about the end of the world – major diseases, planes exploding, people dying of overdoses, hurricanes destroying churches, bombs falling on villages etc. Kode 9 kindly donated the track – The mix was built around that seed.

It’s reflective, calm and a bit fucking depressing, which was how my head was at the time. The vocals at the start were taken off actual BBC footage of the tsunami disaster area. Had to play out in Prague the next day, so one or 2 grime tracks crept their way into the mix as well! Near the end, there’s a beautiful melodic track by Low Profile Society, which adds a little light, but the strings are off-key, so it’s still kind of cold and numb.

Mike Colony kindly said it was okay to stick Crunch’s Vexem at the end of the mix. As for the other tracks, they are either Combat material, loops or stuff from other people – it was entirely for charity so I didn’t think people would mind too much.”
